統計量(Mean,Median,Mode,Range)の英語表現を覚えよう

この記事では、４つの基本的な統計量に関する英語表現について説明します。

Mean（平均値）

Mean:Add up the numbers and divide by how many numbers. (筆者訳)Mean（平均値）は、有限個のデータの総和をデータの個数で割ったものです。出典：*1

Example（例）：What is the Mean of these numbers? 6,10,8

Step1:Add the numbers.(それぞれの数字を加算) 6+10+8=24

Step2:Divide by how many numbers.(加算結果を数字の数で割る) 24÷3=8 The Mean is 8.

Median: Simply list all numbers in order and choose the middle one (筆者訳)Median（平均値）:Middle Number(真ん中の数)であり、有限個のデータを小さい順に並べたとき中央に位置する値です。

例えば、データの数がもし２つの偶数であると、真ん中となる数は2つありますので、その２つの平均値を中央値とします。
Example（例）：Find the Median of 12, 3 and 6

Step1:Put the numbers in order.（数字を大きい順や小さい順に並べる） 3,6,12

Step2:The middle is the median.（真ん中の数が中央値である）

The middle is 6. The Median is 6.

Mode:the value that occurs most often （筆者訳）最頻値:最も頻繁に出現する値です。

Exmaple(例): Find the mode {19, 8, 29, 35, 19, 28, 15}.

Step1: Arrange them in order（小さい順又は大きい順に並べる）: {8, 15, 19, 19, 28, 29, 35}

Step2: 19 appears twice, all the rest appear only once, so 19 is the mode. （19は２つあり、他の数字は１つであるため、19が最頻値である。）

Range:The difference between the lowest and highest values. Range （筆者訳）値域は、最大値と最小値の差です。

Example 例)Find the range for 8, 11, 5, 9, 7, 6, and 15.

Step1: Find the The lowest value: 5 （最小値を見つける）

Step2: Find the highest value：15 （最大値を見つける）

Step3 :The Rang is 15-5=10

問題例)Find the mean, median, mode, and range for 5,6,9,11,12,12, and 14.

解答例) Mean:69/7 Median:11 Mode:12 Range:14-5=9
