Equation（方程式）に関する英語を覚えよう！

今日の記事では、Equation（方程式）に関する用語、すなわちAlgebraic notation代数的記法の英語表現を紹介します。

そもそもAlgebra（代数）というのは、聞きなれない用語かと思います。 アメリカの学生などにElementary Algebra（初等代数）を日本では何年生位で習うのと聞かれ、？？？となりました。

Linear Algebra(線形代数)は大学で習います、と答え、そりゃそうでしょ！！って反応をされました。

Elementary Algebra（初等代数）は、中学校で習う方程式などの数学のことです。 さっそくEquation（方程式）に関する用語について説明します。

Equation（方程式）

方程式は、Equationと言います。

An equation is a statement of an equality containing one or more variables. （筆者訳）方程式は、1又は複数の変数を含む命題である。 出典：*1

Statementは、命題という意味です。

A Variable(変数)

変数は、Variableと言います。複数の場合は、Variablesです。

A Variable is a symbol for a number we don't know yet. （筆者訳）変数は、まだ知らない数のための記号である。 出典:*2

Example) $$\color{red}{-10x+8y}$$ x and y are variables. （xとyは変数。）

Expression(式)

式は、Expressionと言います。

An expression is a finite combination of symbols that is well-formed according to rules that depend on the context. （筆者訳）式は、文脈に依存する規則に従って適切に形成された記号の有限の組み合わせである。 出典:*3

Example) $$\color{red}{-12x+3y-9}$$ is an expression. （-12x+3y-9 は、式である。）

Constant(定数)

定数は、Constantです。

A constant is an independent fixed number that remains the same and does not change. （筆者訳）定数は、同じ数であり変化しない独立した固定の数である。 出典:*4

Example) $$\color{red}{y=3x+7}$$ 7 is the constant. (7が定数。)

Coefficient（係数）

係数は、Coefficientと言います。

A Coefficient is a number used to multiply a variable. （筆者訳）係数は、変数に掛ける数である。 出典:*5

Example) $$\color{red}{4x^{2}+3x+y+3}$$ 4,3, and 1 are coefficients, but 3 is  a constant. (4と3と1は係数であるが、3は定数である。)

Term(項)

項は、Termと言います。

Term is a number, a variable, or a coefficient multiplied by one or more variables. Terms in algebraic expressions are separated by addition or subtraction. (筆者訳)項は、数、変数、1又は複数の変数によって掛けた係数である。 代数式の項は、足し算と掛け算によって分けられる。 出典:*4

Example1)

$$\color{red}{5t}$$;there is one term:5t

Example2)

$$\color{red}{-12x+3y-10}$$; there are 3 terms: -12x, 3y, and 10
